when show s producers began see youth appeal of character slimer, began featured more prominently. in 1988, series retooled , renamed slimer! , real ghostbusters, , featured hourlong format typical real ghostbusters episode leading more kid-friendly slimer! cartoon. series progressed, regular real ghostbusters episodes started become lighter in tone not frighten growing fanbase of young children. additionally, characterizations became more one-dimensional, , animation became less detailed. more changes went on behind scenes departure of writer j. michael straczynski. dave coulier of full house fame came on fill role of peter (voiced lorenzo music), buster jones took on winston arsenio hall, , kath soucie took on janine after laura summer voiced role. straczynski returned series temporarily in 1990 season.. cast members remained throughout entire series frank welker (voice of stantz , slimer) , maurice lamarche (voice of spengler). show cancelled in 1991.

extreme ghostbusters sequel , spin-off of real ghostbusters aired in late 1997. show featured new team of younger ghostbusters led veteran ghostbuster egon spengler, secretary janine melnitz, , ghost slimer. premise similar plot of ghostbusters ii. set years after end of real ghostbusters, lack of supernatural activity has put ghostbusters out of business. each has gone separate way, except egon, still lives in firehouse monitor containment unit, further studies, , teach class on paranormal @ local college. when ghosts start reappear, egon forced recruit 4 students new ghostbusters. new ghostbusters kylie griffin, genius, expert on occult, , female counterpart egon; eduardo rivera, hip, cynical latino slacker , counterpart peter; garrett miller, wheelchair-bound young athlete , counterpart ray; , roland jackson, studious african-american machinery whiz , counterpart winston. show given los angeles commission on disabilities award making 1 of main characters (garrett) disabled universally relatable.

a new animated series, titled ghostbusters: ecto force, announced development on june 20, 2016. series set in year 2050 , follows new team of ghostbusters capture ghosts around world , targeted 2018 debut. however, reitman revealed in august 2017 series has been postponed prioritize development on planned ghostbusters animated feature.
