born in kempten im allgäu, engstler started racing in european hillclimbing championship , german long distance cup, won. 1988 competed in german formula three, winning class b title in 1989. in 1993 switched touring car racing, german touring car championship class 2 champion in alfa romeo 155. between 1994 , 1999, raced in german super touring championship various teams. finished first in 2000 german touring car challenge, 2 wins. 2 more seasons spent racing in series in 2002 , 2003. after season in 2004 german production car championship, moved asian touring car championship. dominated championship, bought him back titles in 2005 , 2006. title came in 2007, winning german adac procar series second year.


2008 first saw him enter wtcc. solid first season saw him finish second in independents trophy. highlight of year sixth place overall finish in final race in macau.


before end of 2008 season, won bmw sports trophy independent drivers, ahead of 1 hundred , forty other bmw drivers around world.


engstler involved in bizarre incident @ 2009 wtcc meeting @ pau. having finished sixth in race one, started race 2 second position. took lead alain menu @ start , led first lap. safety car deployed following 3 separate incidents on first lap. safety car jinked left right middle of circuit, , nature of circuit, engstler unsighted slammed safety car causing substantial damage both cars, ending race.
