origins , etymology

according legend, gertrude, daughter of pippin of landen, founded chapel here in 8th century. document otto i, dated 966, mentions church of iatrebache. name ietrebecca – possibly celtic root ett meaning rapid movement , dutch word beek meaning stream – found first time in document dated 1127. current spelling appears eleven years later in 1138, around time newer , larger church built.


middle ages
