World War II HMAS Warramunga (I44)



warramunga in 1944.


at start of 1944, warramunga helped cover landing @ saidor, before leaving task force 74 refits in sydney. after rejoining task fore @ start of february, warramunga participated in amphibious landings in admiralties, @ tanamera bay, wakde-sarmi, , biak. may july, destroyer assigned patrol , escort duties. on 22 july, warramunga , cruiser hmas australia sailed sydney refits , leave. returning in august, destroyer involved in morotai landings on 15 september. warramunga part of covering force leyte landings, , after australia , uss honolulu damaged during operation, escorted 2 cruisers port repairs.


at start of 1945, while assigned manus island, warramunga s oerlikon guns replaced bofors taken disabled landing ship dock. during invasion of lingayen gulf in january, warramunga hit japanese kamikaze aircraft, instead crashed destroyer uss brooks. on 1 may, destroyer supported landing @ tarakan, 9 days later participated in landings @ wewak, before sailing australia two-month refit. on return subic bay, warramunga present japanese surrender of philippines. destroyer sailed japan, , present in tokyo bay on victory on japan day (2 september 1945), when japanese instrument of surrender signed. destroyer earned 5 battle honours wartime service: pacific 1943–45 , new guinea 1943–44 , leyte gulf 1944 , lingayen gulf 1945 , , borneo 1945 . after end of world war ii, warramunga assisted in repatriation of prisoners-of-war, , served 4 tours of duty british commonwealth occupation force.
