the course again changed edition, time spanning 5 legs: newport, rhode island/new york — brixham, devon — cape town — tauranga — salvador, brazil — newport. although race technically started , ended in newport, preceded prologue race , in boats crews of 5 raced new york, take part in sail america, major sailing event marking first anniversary of september 11, 2001 attacks. main around alone event started new york, , finished in newport.

the 2006 edition covered route of 30,140 nautical miles (55,820 km). race started in bilbao (spain), on october 22, 2006, , finished there. there 2 stops, in fremantle (australia) , norfolk (usa).

the race open monohull yachts conforming open 50 , open 60 class criteria. open classes unrestricted in aspects box rule governs parameters such overall length, draught, appendages , stability, numerous other safety features.
