the idea law & order: special victims unit originated 1986 preppie murder case of robert chambers, strangled jennifer levin, woman dated whom later killed during claimed consensual rough sex in manhattan s central park. crime inspired dick wolf write story season 1 episode of law & order titled kiss girls , make them die . after writing episode, however, case continued haunt wolf, wanted go deeper psychology of crimes examine role of human sexuality.

the original title of show sex crimes, reflecting sexual nature of crimes depicted on show. there concern among producers that, should sex crimes fail, identifying new show law & order franchise hurt original show. additionally, ted kotcheff wanted create new series not dependent upon original series success. wolf felt, however, important , commercially desirable have law & order in title, , proposed title of show law & order: sex crimes. barry diller, head of studios usa, concerned title, however, , changed law & order: special victims unit reflect actual unit of new york city police department (nypd) handles sexually based offenses heinous. first episode, payback , premiered on nbc on september 20, 1999.

russian adaptation
