club

hartley played club hurling ballygunner club in waterford , has enjoyed success.


in 1992 hartley won first county club championship medal following 1–12 2–7 defeat of mount sion. club s first title in twenty-four years.


ballygunner surrendered club title following year, in final again in 1995 face mount sion. hartley won second championship medal year following draw , replay. first of 3 county final victories in-a-row ballygunner, defeating lismore in 1996 , passage in 1997.


four club titles in-a-row proved beyond ballygunner, however, club bounced in 1999 hartley winning fifth county championship medal following five-point defeat of old rivals mount sion.


after defeat mount sion in championship decider in 2000, hartley secured sixth championship medal in 2001 when ballygunner accounted lismore. later claimed munster winners medal after club accounted blackrock in provincial final.


after high of winning provincial title ballygunner went on lose 3 club championship finals in succession. broke unenviable record @ fourth attempt hartley winning seventh county championship medal following 2–10 1–12 defeat of de la salle.


ballygunner lost 2 further finals in succession before hartley won 8 championship medal in 2009 following one-point defeat of lismore after draw , replay.


inter-county

hartley first came prominence on inter-county scene member of waterford under-21 teams. in 1992 won munster medal in grade before later lining out in all-ireland final. offaly provided opposition on occasion, however, game ended in draw. replay saw waterford take title 0–12 2–3 , hartley collected all-ireland under-21 medal.


flynn s performances @ underage levels brought him attention of senior selectors , made senior debut in 1993 championship. less auspicious start hartley s hurling career waterford defeated minnows of kerry in opening round of munster championship. 1 of lowest points in waterford hurling.


in 1998 hartley played in first munster final in senior grade. waterford held all-ireland champions clare draw in munster final, however, decies lost replay. hartley s side later faced kilkenny in all-ireland semi-final in county s first appearance in croke park since 1963. kilkenny won single point.


in 2002 waterford emerged doldrums reaching munster final once again. hartley captain collected first munster winners medal waterford defeated reigning all-ireland champions tipperary 2–23 3–12. first provincial crown in thirty-nine years. waterford s hurling odyssey came end in all-ireland semi-final.


after surrendering munster title cork in 2003, hartley decided call time on inter-county career.


in 2005 hartley had change of heart , decided return waterford team 1 final season. disappointing year waterford crashed out of stages of provincial championship in 2005 before facing defeat cork in all-ireland series.


in january 2006 hartley announced retirement inter-county hurling second time.

hartley unsuccessfully lined out munster in inter-provincial series of games.
