in april 2009, sikh army captain kamaljeet s. kalsi, doctor, of sikh coalition, filed objection inspector general , department of defense allowed continue serve religious apparel intact. army reserve second lieutenant tejdeep singh rattan, dentist, joined in filing petition. kalsi joined army via health professions scholarship program , had been reassured recruiter wearing uniform while retaining religiously required appearance , apparel not problem. kalsi had served in uniform without problems @ west point , travis air force base. yet, problem arose in 2009 when pentagon told kalsi , rattan called active duty , need shave beards , stop wearing turbans.


the sikh coalition argued not allowing servicemembers continue maintain appearance according religion violated religious freedom restoration act of 1993. army argued continued wear of turban , beard violated current regulation, hinder servicemembers meeting health, safety, , mission requirements including use of gas masks. in late october 2009, kalsi allowed exemption policy, , able serve while adhering religious beliefs. army continues maintain these specific determinations due individual case , present regulations not change, sikh coalition holds out beginning of policy shift allow other sikhs serve country in uniform.


the case of rattan put on hold, pending completion of dental boards exam. upon graduation basic officer training @ fort sam houston captain on march 22, 2010 rattan granted exemption. third serviceman, specialist lamba, graduated fort jackson in november 2010 granted exemption.


in january 2017, following outcome of lawsuit under religious freedom restoration act, regulations changed, allowing wearing of beards , turbans religious individuals (the same ruling allowed wearing of burkas , hijabs muslims). ruling stipulate regulations can require beards must worn @ lengths (via rolling , clipping) , must not interfere operations.
