formation , history
the regiment first formed gentlemen , yeomanry of warwickshire in 1794, raised 4 troops of yeomanry. these 4 troops regimented in 1796 warwickshire regiment of yeomanry cavalry; regiment expanded fifth troop in 1813, sixth in 1831, , in 1854, crimean war causing upsurge in martial sentiment, 2 more troops formed.
second boer war
the yeomanry not intended serve overseas, due string of defeats during black week in december 1899, british government realized going need more troops regular army. royal warrant issued on 24 december 1899 allow volunteer forces serve in second boer war. royal warrant asked standing yeomanry regiments provide service companies of approximately 115 men each imperial yeomanry. regiment provided 5th (warwickshire) company 2nd battalion in 1900 , 103rd (warwickshire) company same battalion in 1901.
in 1901, regiment reorganised mounted infantry warwickshire imperial yeomanry. in 1908 transferred territorial force, returning cavalry role , equipping hussars, under new title of warwickshire yeomanry.
first world war
in accordance territorial , reserve forces act 1907 (7 edw. 7, c.9) brought territorial force being, tf intended home defence force service during wartime , members not compelled serve outside country. however, on outbreak of war on 4 august 1914, many members volunteered imperial service. therefore, tf units split in august , september 1914 1st line (liable overseas service) , 2nd line (home service unable or unwilling serve overseas) units. later, 3rd line formed act reserve, providing trained replacements 1st , 2nd line regiments.
1/1st warwickshire yeomanry
the regiment mobilised in august 1914, remained in england until 1915, when sailed egypt 2nd mounted division. during move, horse transport wayfarer torpedoed on 11 april 1915 having left avonmouth; although did not sink, horses had rescued. volunteers of regiment saved 763 horses, receiving military cross , twelve meritorious service medals. arrived in egypt on 24 april, before being moved gallipoli service dismounted infantry. landed @ suvla bay on 18 august , saw action @ battle of scimitar hill, on 21 august. regiment took heavy losses, remained in line until withdrawn @ end of october. assigned australian mounted division in february 1917, serving in palestine cavalry, , seeing action @ first , second battles of gaza, charge @ huj battle of mughar ridge , battle of jerusalem. withdrawn in april 1918, , amalgamated 1/1st south nottinghamshire hussars b battalion, machine gun corps, renamed 100th (warwickshire , south nottinghamshire yeomanry) battalion, machine gun corps, serve on western front remainder of war. @ armistice, serving army troops fourth army.
2/1st warwickshire yeomanry
the 2nd line regiment formed @ warwick in september 1914. in april 1915, joined 2/1st south midland mounted brigade @ cirencester , in june moved king s lynn area brigade joined 2/2nd mounted division. on 14 july 1915 @ holkham , in october @ fakenham. on 31 march 1916, remaining mounted brigades ordered numbered in single sequence , brigade became 10th mounted brigade (and division 3rd mounted division) @ tunbridge wells.
in july 1916 there major reorganization of 2nd line yeomanry units in united kingdom. 12 regiments converted cyclists; 2/1st warwickshire yeomanry remained mounted , transferred 1st mounted brigade in new 1st mounted division (3rd mounted division redesignated) @ thorndon park, brentwood. in november @ epping , in april 1917 thorndon park.
in september 1917, regiment converted cyclists , joined 214th brigade in 71st division @ colchester. brigade intended serve @ murmansk. on 12 february 1918, brigade joined 67th division, still @ colchester. in march, fit men posted france , murmansk operation cancelled. regiment remained in east anglia rest of war.
3/1st warwickshire yeomanry
the 3rd line regiment formed @ warwick in june 1915 , affiliated 4th reserve cavalry regiment @ tidworth. in 1917, absorbed 5th reserve cavalry regiment, @ tidworth.
between wars
post war, commission set consider shape of territorial force (territorial army 1 october 1921). experience of first world war made clear cavalry surfeit. commission decided 14 senior regiments retained cavalry (though lovat scouts , scottish horse remain mounted scouts ). 8 regiments converted armoured car companies of royal tank corps (rtc), 1 reduced battery in regiment, 1 absorbed local infantry battalion, 1 became signals regiment , 2 disbanded. remaining 25 regiments converted brigades of royal field artillery between 1920 , 1922. 2nd senior regiment in order of precedence, regiment retained horsed cavalry.
second world war

the regiment did not mechanise before outbreak of second world war; on mobilisation, attached 1st cavalry division, , moved in 1940 middle east, saw service in iraq , syria in 1941. mechanised armoured regiment in late 1941 , transferred royal armoured corps, division redesignating 10th armoured division. regiment saw service in north african campaign, fighting @ second battle of el alamein whilst attached 2nd new zealand division. deployed italy in 1944, saw action in italian campaign in june , july.
post-war
after war, regiment reconstituted in territorial army. in 1956 amalgamated queen s own worcestershire hussars, forming queen s own warwickshire , worcestershire yeomanry. regiment continued armoured regiment comet tanks until 1962 when became armoured car reconnaissance regiment. in 1966 became light reconnaissance regiment equipped daimler dingo scout cars.
in 1969 volunteer territorial army dramatically reduced labour government , except 1 yeomanry regiment others disbanded permitted retain small cadre of 5 members possible expansion in later years. in addition regiment invited form signals squadron, 67 (queen s own warwickshire , worcestershire yeomanry) signal squadron @ stratford-on-avon , stourbridge royal signals role. squadron raised former members of queen s own warwickshire , worcestershire yeomanry.
in 1971 change of government each yeomanry cadre authorised expand squadron strength (120 men). 3 squadrons raised cadres of queen s own warwickshire , worcestershire yeomanry, staffordshire yeomanry , shropshire yeomanry formed new regiment called queen s own mercian yeomanry reconnaissance role. defence cuts of 1992 queen s own mercian yeomanry amalgamated duke of lancaster s own yeomanry form royal mercian , lancastrian yeomanry h.m. queen colonel in chief. had medium reconnaissance role , equipped land rovers.
in july 1999 (queen s own warwickshire , worcestershire yeomanry) squadron amalgamated b (staffordshire yeomanry) squadron of same regiment, form (staffordshire, warwickshire , worcestershire) squadron, royal mercian , lancastrian yeomanry @ dudley.
in october 2006, royal mercian , lancastrian yeomanry became single cap badge regiment, when individual cap badges of each squadron replaced newly designed rmly cap badge. incorporated mercian eagle queen s own mercian yeomanry red rose duke of lancaster s own yeomanry. served in armoured replacement role, providing replacement tank crews regular armoured regiments. point @ h-det (hereford) joined regiment, provide recce troop.
in july 2013, announced royal mercian , lancastrian yeomanry restructured under army 2020 plan. squadron, b (staffordshire, warwickshire , worcestershire yeomanry), resubordinated royal yeomanry.
