the festival
day 0: chatimpu
the jatara(folk festival) officially begins chatimpu (official announcement) during midnight of 2nd tuesday of month of may. traditionally town folk stay away streets during chatimpu. announcement carried playing musical instruments known dappu.
day 1: bhairagi vesham
the day after chatimpu bhairagi vesham. on day(wednesday) people used smear body white color paste(namam kommu) , wear garland made of rella kaya (fruit). hold neem leaves hand , tie waist neem leaves. devotees walk temple through city , leave neem leaves , rella kaya graland there @ temple after darshan of goddess. devotees such procession on each day rest of festival duration.
day 2: banda vesham
on day devotees used smear body kumkum color paste , ties ribbon head.
day 3: thoti vesham
on day devotees used smear body charcoal , wears garland made out of neem leaves.
day 4: sunnapu gandalu
on sixth day of festival, devotees smear body white color paste , applies dots charcoal. , carries pot (veyyi kalla dutta) on head.
day 5: dora vesham
on day devotees used smear body sandal paste (chandanam) , wears graland made out of neem leaves , lemons.
day 6: mathangi vesham
gangamma killed palegadu in dhora vesham, consoled chieftain s wife in mathangi vesham.
day 7: gangamma jatara
the last day of festival celebrated ganga jatara. during day gangamma temples in tirupati flocked lakhs of devotees. people used visit temple , offer pongallu and/or sarees gangamma. few devotees used have darshan of gangamma wearing sapparalu (a special gopuram object made of bamboo)along dappu vaidyam (a musical instrument). ragi ambali served devotes visiting temples on city.
after midnight clay idol of gangamma(viswaroopam) installed in front of temple. guy dress perantallu , remove chempa(cheek) of viswaroopam referred chempa tholagimpu . clay later distributed devotees believed have curing powers. event entire seven-day jatara come end.
