biography
early life

george gonzales born porfiria , alenjandro gonzales in family s home on agua fría street in santa fe on january 5, 1938. raised in agua fria neighborhood. became musician , singer during teens, performing traditional spanish language songs part of musical trio albert sanchez , ernest sanchez. trio placed second in lucky strike hour competition, held in las vegas, nevada. gonzales, known baritone singing voice , guitar, later recorded several albums during life.


gonzales, received highest award @ state spanish elocution competition, elected senior class president @ santa fe high school.


he attended college of santa fe , served in army national guard after high school.


broadcasting career

gonzales spent of professional career in radio broadcasting. began career radio announcer on ktrc, radio station, in 1955. worked @ announcer kdce, radio station in española, new mexico, owned former governor john burroughs. gonzales purchased kdce burroughs, owned , operated fifteen years. , brother, belarmino blackie gonzales, founded radio kbso-fm, first spanish language radio station in northern new mexico. in 1991, gonzales acquired , launched station, kswv (known que suave ), ran 4 sons. continued work announcer , salesman kswv 2000s.


political career

gonzales began political career member of santa fe county commission. won election commission 2 terms.


in 1968, elected mayor of santa fe, new mexico. gonzales, thirty years old @ time of election, became youngest mayor in santa fe s history. served mayor 1968 1972. in 1972, unsuccessfully ran united states house of representatives.


his son, javier gonzales, elected mayor of santa fe in 2014. george gonzales worked son s campaign manager during mayoral campaign.


gonzales served on boards of many community organizations, including santa fe fiesta council. general don diego de vargas @ fiestas de santa fe, annual city festival held in september. has been honored , knighted el morros de españa.


george gonzales died on march 24, 2015, @ age of 77. survived wife, celine, , 3 of 4 sons, patricio patrick , javier , estevan. predecaeased fourth son, george anthony gonzales. funeral held @ cathedral basilica of st. francis of assisi in santa fe burial @ memorial gardens. public reception held @ santa fe community convention center following funeral.
