yawkey born thomas austin in detroit on february 21, 1903. grandson of lumber , iron magnate william clyman yawkey, agreed in principle buy detroit tigers in 1903 died before deal closed. deal completed tom s uncle, bill yawkey. after father died, tom s uncle adopted him , took yawkey name.


bill yawkey died in 1919 , left $40 million estate adopted son, clause in forbade him taking possession of until turned 30 years old. tom yawkey graduate of sheffield scientific school @ yale university in 1925 , member of phi gamma delta fraternity.
