biography
early life
born february 18, 1926 @ fort monroe, virginia. willard scott son of army coastal artillery officer willard warren scott sr. , bernice peck scott [both buried @ military cemetery @ presidio in san francisco]. general scott spent part of life in san francisco and, in fact, crossed golden gate bridge on day opened in 1937, leading contingent of student crossing guards. had 2 brothers richard , peter scott. before graduating military academy met justine dorney of new rochelle, new york. married in june 1948 , had 7 children. general scott continued ardent supporter of army football , had honor of having 1 of mascot army mules (general scott or scotty) named in honor vote of association of graduates.
military career
general scott received, throughout military career, distinguished service medal, 2 legions of merit, 2 bronze stars, air medal, joint service commendation medal, , 2 commendation medals. lt. scott s first command battery commander, 5th field artillery battalion, 1st division in europe, 1949–52 (commanding dog battery first commanded alexander hamilton in battle of long island in 1776). during vietnam war colonel scott deputy commander of 2nd field force v artillery, , commander 23rd artillery group. upon promotion brigadier general took on commanding general, mac v special troops, 1970–72, commanding general, 25th infantry division, 1976–78, , commanding general, v corps in germany, 1980–81.
in 1981, scott selected 52nd superintendent of u.s. military academy. served superintendent until retirement army in 1986. after army general scott served executive director of association of military colleges 1988 through 1997.
general scott honorary member of society of cincinnati.
always active in catholic church, scott served extraordinary minister of holy communion, lector, , religious education teacher through career , retirement. while @ west point, both cadet , superintendent, attended mass daily.
coincidentally, willard w. scott cadet @ west point @ same time winfield w. scott, willard being 2 years senior winfield. while share w. w. scott abbreviated name, 2 not related. both attained rank of lieutenant general , both became service academy superintendents, willard being superintendent @ west point through several of same years winfield superintendent @ united states air force academy.
only 1 of general scott s 26 grandchildren has followed him u.s. army. grandson, scott aladar rosenshein, son of lawrence , katie (née scott) rosenshein, member of class of 2009 of united states military academy. grandfather member of army lacrosse team , wore #48 in honor of grandfather (who class of 1948). in addition, 2 of general scott s daughters, mary , susan, married west pointers, steven starner , david shanahan, respectively. daughter, margaret, expert on indonesia after having made several trips there number of years ago.
scott died on january 1, 2009 @ home in alexandria, virginia form of parkinson s disease.
