the disaster occurred @ 1:45pm when express failed negotiate 183 m radius curve in deep cutting known locally straw cutting, shortly after crossing 6 mile creek between hyde , rock , pillar. train derailed, engine coming rest against side of cutting 60 m derailed; boiler burst, extinguishing fire in firebox severely scalding fireman. carriages piled around it; 7 passenger carriages had left tracks, second overturning , coming rest in front of locomotive while 4 of other carriages telescoped together. force of crash such undercarriage of 1 twisted form of letter s , 1 passenger survived thrown out of carriage, struck side of cutting, , bounced in through window. guards van , 2 goods wagons @ rear failed derail. bits of train scattered throughout surrounding farmland , cutting contained mass of splintered wood, bent steel, , broken seats; attending doctor described resembling result of bomb blast .


due remote location, took approximately ninety minutes rescuers arrive. reports reached middlemarch of accident there possibly few injuries , medical personnel did not travel in hurry disaster, upon catching sight of disaster rise in road half mile away, proceeded swiftly. in intervening time, injured tended passengers relatively undamaged rear carriages , local farmer pat kinney owned property through cutting ran; son frank had boarded train @ last stop in hyde , 1 of deceased. passengers trapped in wreckage several hours , medical personnel – assistance of railway maintenance staff – worked until dark see.
