background

robert owen (1771-1858), social theorist inspired establishment of franklin community.


the arrival of welsh social reformer robert owen on american shores in fall of 1824 met public curiosity , expectation. owen s ideas relationship between human behavior , happiness , material conditions of existence familiar intellectuals in united states 1817, when publicized in various british reviews. in response, favoring communitarian ideal had established organization called new york society promoting communities, group headed quaker apothecary named cornelius c. blatchly. blatchly , associates welcome owen new york on november 4, 1824, presenting visitor copy of group s 1822 publication extracting owen s writings, essay on common wealths.


a great popular interest surrounded owen s arrival , subsequent announcement had purchased entire established community in state of indiana harmony society $140,000, view establishing model community test social theories in crucible of practice. despite — or perhaps due — distance between new york , owenite example on american frontier in indiana, interest grew in establishment parallel communities elsewhere.


despite existence of new york society promoting communities, not formal authority behind creation of owenite colony; instead group of committed freethinkers new york city area, including atheist leader george houston, had suffered imprisonment in england anti-deist writings.

in spring of 1826 franklin community founded, preparatory constitution approved in march , site selected following month. site selected located 2 miles hudson river near town of haverstraw in rockland county, new york. included 120 or 130 acres of farmland, purchase price of $16,000 or $18,000 stipulated. enterprise named in honor of benjamin franklin (1709-1790), 1 of founding fathers of american republic.


george houston named secretary of new owenite community. families began move in immediately, beginning farm land in may 1826. many believed so-called sweat equity (to borrow modern phrase) sufficient attain membership in community. deprived of access robert owen s purse, fledgling community found difficult raise funds, managing raise necessary one-third downpayment on june 23, 1826. financial restructuring required , constitution altered shortly thereafter require cash payment in exchange community membership — change resulted in great unhappiness of participants, felt cheated , robbed of pioneering labor. 190 years later house stands today in town of haverstraw on outskirts of village of west haverstraw. article exists in local paper titled short , unhappy life of backwoods utopia isabelle savell

former secretary of franklin community george houston found new rationalist journal in january 1827, called correspondent. houston joined in editorial task abner kneeland, subsequent trial blasphemy prove 1 of landmark political events of decade of 1830s.
