three vertical ōban prints of 39 26 centimetres (15 in × 10 in) each make first awabi-tori triptych. signed utamaro ga (哥麿画, picture utamaro ) , published c. 1788–90 tsuruya kiemon s firm senkakudō.
the scene depicts group of women on rocky shore watching ama divers. in boat left, 2 women undress while in central print helps swimming colleague. swimming ama appears in right print. swimmers appear small , thin, bodies enveloped in wet hair. french art critic edmond de goncourt compares these firgure traditional japanese representations of dead souls coming haunt earth .
the rocks appear manaita-iwa (俎岩, chopping-block rocks ) in enoshima in kanagawa prefecture. in case, women on rocks pilgrims on way enoshima shrine worship deity benten. shrine displayed treasures every 6 years; 1 of these displays in 1791, , utamaro may have produced image 1790 in anticipation of event.
