club

browne plays club hurling mount sion , has enjoyed success in lengthy career.


after claiming championship medals in minor , under-21 grades, later became key member of mount sion senior hurling team. browne won first championship medal in grade in 1994 following 2–13 1–11 defeat of passage.


after surrendering title following year, 1998 before mount sion reached championship decider once again. ballyduff upper opponents on occasion, however, 3–19 0–10 thrashing gave browne second championship medal.


mount sion failed retain title once again, however, browne lined out in third successive decider in 2000. 1–20 0–9 trouncing of ballygunner gave browne third championship medal.


both mount sion , ballygunner lined out in county final once again in 2002. 1–19 2–14 victory gave browne fourth championship medal. mount sion subsequently reached provincial decider sixmilebridge provided opposition. narrow 0–12 0–10 defeat gave browne munster medal.


mount sion retained county championship first time in thirty years in 2003. 1–14 1–10 defeat of ballygunner gave browne fifth championship medal.


in 2004 browne won sixth championship medal mount sion pulled off hat-trick of county final victories. 4–14 4–7 defeat of ballygunner gave mount sion first three-in-a-row since 1965.


four-in-a-row proved beyond mount sion, however, team qualified county decider once again in 2006. ballygunner opponents again, however, 2–13 0–12 victory gave browne seventh championship medal.


minor , under-21

browne first came prominence waterford member of county minor team in late eighties. enjoyed little success in grade, however, later joined waterford under-21 hurling team.


in 1992 browne captain of waterford under-21 hurlers team reached provincial decider. narrow 0–17 1–12 defeat of clare gave him first munster medal. later led team croke park all-ireland final showdown offaly. 4–4 0–16 draw result on occasion, however, waterford more effective in replay. 0–12 2–3 victory gave browne all-ireland under-21 hurling championship medal while had honour of collecting cup on behalf of team.


two years later in 1994 browne won second munster medal in under-21 grade.


senior

by stage browne member of waterford senior hurling team. made debut against galway in national league game in 1991 , became regular member of starting fifteen.


after number of years in doldrums of provincial hurling, waterford qualified munster final in 1998 browne lining out @ centre field. waterford held all-ireland champions clare draw in decider, however, decies lost replay. browne s side later faced kilkenny in all-ireland semi-final in county s first appearance in croke park since 1963. kilkenny won single point. browne finished season collecting waterford s first all-star in sixteen years while named eircell hurler of year.


four years later in 2002 waterford reached munster final once again. historic day waterford defeated tipperary 2–23 3–12 first provincial crown in thirty-nine years. browne s first munster medal. waterford s hurling odyssey came end in all-ireland semi-final.


after surrendering munster title cork in 2003, browne s side in provincial showpiece third successive year in 2004. in 1 of greatest games of all-time waterford defeated cork in munster final first time in forty-five years take title 3–16 1–21. in spite of collecting second munster medal, all-ireland appearance eluded team yet again.


the following few years proved difficult browne. waterford crashed out of stages of provincial championship in 2005 , 2006. on both these occasions team defeated cork in all-ireland series. there rumours @ time browne quitting inter-county hurling planning emigrate.


in 2007 browne added national hurling league medal collection when waterford defeated kilkenny 0–20 0–18 in final. later claimed third munster medal waterford defeated limerick 3–17 1–14 in provincial decider. while waterford viewed possibly going on , winning all-ireland title first time in half century, limerick ambushed waterford in all-ireland semi-final. in spite of disappointing end season, browne collected third all-star award.


2008 began poorly waterford team lost opening game clare manager justin mccarthy. in spite of poor start browne s side reached all-ireland final first time in forty-five years. kilkenny provided opposition , went on trounce waterford 3–30 1–13 claim third all-ireland title in-a-row.


browne lined out in munster final in 2010 cork providing opposition. 2–15 apiece draw result on occasion, browne scoring equalising goal waterford in final minute. waterford went on win replay after extra-time goal dan shanahan. fourth munster medal browne, record shares 5 other waterford players.


browne s last game waterford came @ age of 40, in 2013 all-ireland senior hurling championship against kilkenny on 13 july when came on substitute. announced retirement in april 2014, saying tough decision athlete know have been blessed in many ways have experienced have waterford hurling teams on past 3 decades .


inter-provincial

browne has lined out munster in inter-provincial series of games. after joining panel unused substitute in 1994, lined out on starting fifteen year later. narrow 0–13 1–9 defeat of ulster gave him first railway cup medal.


this won first part of famous three-in-a-row munster. defeats of leinster in 1996 , 1997 gave browne 2 further railway cup medals. 4 in-a-row proved beyond munster following year.


in 2004 browne returned munster team after five-year absence. unsuccessful campaign southerners, however, 3 years later browne won fourth railway cup medal following 2–22 2–19 defeat of connacht.
