ottoman era
in 1596, named village, ’aytarun in ottoman nahiya (subdistrict) of tibnin under liwa (district) of safad, population of 91 households , 15 bachelors, muslim. villagers paid taxes on agricultural products, such wheat, barley, goats , beehives, in addition occasional revenues” , fixed sum; total of 14,570 akçe.
visiting in 1875, victor guérin described village 200 metualis.
in 1881, palestine exploration fund s survey of western palestine (swp) described it: large village, built of stone, containing 400 moslems, situated in bed of wady, olives, gardens , arable land. water large birket , cisterns.
1985 south lebanon conflict , aftermath
during south lebanon conflict (1985–2000) aitaroun part of south lebanon security belt. around 20 soldiers of south lebanon army kidnapped hezbollah in final year of war.
after war s end, in 2001, hezbollah militants desecrated graves of 17 members of sla.
2006 israel-lebanon conflict
during 2006 israel-lebanon conflict, on july 16, 12 civilians akhrass family, including 7 canadian nationals, killed when aitaroun home destroyed in israeli airstrikes .
on july 18, 9 civilians awada family killed after israeli air-strikes against homes.
on july 19, 6 civilians killed , 8 wounded israeli strikes, while trying flee aitaroun.
the village lost 41 villagers war new figures said. families laid flowers , read quranic verses @ graves on october 23, 2006, marks eid ul-fitr-holiday.
