arriving in boston, massachusetts, on 4 july, 3 encountered hardships , delays caused largely cholera epidemic in eastern states. swept across northern tier michigan via travelers on waterways. 3 men reached pittsburgh, , started there october 8 travel west along ohio river. arrived in mt. vernon, indiana midnight on 18 october. next morning, party made way new harmony, indiana.

in april 1833, prince max , bodmer set out st. louis, missouri on 2,500-mile journey steamboat , later keelboat missouri river. traveled far fort mckenzie (near present-day fort benton, montana). after wintering @ fort clark near mandan villages, returned downriver following spring, having spent more year on upper missouri. bodmer had extensively documented journey visual images, while prince max took copious notes book intended write.
