thomas roscoe rede stebbing born on 6 february 1835 in euston square, london, seventh of thirteen or fourteen children, clergyman , editor of athenaeum, henry stebbing, , wife, mary griffin. thomas educated @ king s college school, , afterwards entered king s college, london study classics, graduating ba in 1855. matriculated @ lincoln college, oxford, before studied @ worcester college, oxford, gaining ba in law , modern history there in 1857 , ma in 1859. around time, master @ radley college , wellington college. took on various roles @ worcester college, including of fellow (1860–1868), tutor (1865–1867), vice-provost (1865) , dean (1866), lecturer in divinity. resigned fellowship in 1868. ordained church of england samuel wilberforce, bishop of oxford in 1859.
by 1863, stebbing had begun work tutor in reigate, surrey, met entomologist william wilson saunders, daughter mary anne capable botanist , illustrator. stebbing took study of natural history around time, , married mary anne in 1867. couple moved torquay, devon after marriage, stebbing continued work tutor , schoolmaster, , began write theology, darwinism , natural history, partly under influence of naturalist william pengelly.
