from 1917, field directly adjacent church basis royal flying corps base, extended royal air force aerodrome. in 1939, in preparation world war ii, airfield enlarged defend south coast against luftwaffe. base remained open until 1966.


its close proximity raf base meant service personnel killed on or near base regularly buried within church s graveyard. there thirty 9 commonwealth burials of 1939-1945 war, airmen, 1 of whom unidentified. there thirteen luftwaffe burials here, 1 of whom unidentified. majority of these airmen killed during battle of britain. today, of these graves tended commonwealth war graves commission, commonwealth war graves grouped in 3 rows on western side of church, , beside them german graves.


also within churchyard grave of air commodore edward teddy mortlock donaldson cb cbe dso afc* lom (february 12, 1912 - june, 1992). raf world war ii ace, holder of flight airspeed record, set in gloster meteor in 1946 took off , landed raf tangmere.


the new window in st. andrew s church dedicated memory of men , women gave lives in service country.
