the first galaxy designed joint venture product between ford , volkswagen group. produced @ joint-venture autoeuropa plant in palmela, portugal, vehicle badge-engineered create 3 vehicles: ford galaxy; volkswagen passenger cars volkswagen sharan; , seat alhambra.


the galaxy used predominantly volkswagen group mechanicals, notably 2.8 litre vr6 petrol engine top versions of volkswagen golf, volkswagen group s 1.9 litre turbocharged direct injection (tdi) turbodiesel unit. 2.0 litre inline-four petrol version used ford powerplant – derived ford i4 dohc engine. in later years, unit supplemented 2.3 litre 16 valve version first seen in facelifted ford scorpio. engine transversely mounted (as mkv escort rs2000) opposed longitudinal mounting in ford scorpio.


the 2.8 litre vr6 model available optional four-wheel-drive system, did not reappear on second generation.


all of vw group sourced engines supplied ford badges on rocker covers, despite being vw group designs. automatic transmissions vw group ag4 boxes, manual gearboxes on engines vxt75 5 speeds (modified versions of trusted ford mtx-75 5 speed set-up suit transverse engine layout).


the original interior used mix of both ford , vw group components, using golf-derived instrument pack, , of switchgear, while curved fascia moulding of ford design, heavily reminiscent of used in ford mondeo.


originally there 3 trim levels; aspen, ghia , glx. however, in 1999, ford introduced new lx , zetec trim styles replaced aspen , glx models. in august 2000, galaxy got facelift, alongside volkswagen , seat relations. received further enhancements 2004my, gaining front end similar facelifted mk3 mondeo.
