the name stainton derives old english meaning of stoney farm/settlement. stān, meaning stone, stone, rock , tūn meaning enclosure, farmstead, village, estate. stainton used site of old roman settlement , built on limestone. situated south east of lake district national park, 5.3 miles south of town of kendal. lancaster canal flows close stainton approximately 1 km south of village. village home small chapel, post office , 128 houses. chapel not used religion reasons more. erected in 1698 efforts convert village hall began in 2003 due not being used , need community area. on 22 november 2013 conversion complete , chapel handed on charity had funded project.
