Jo Gwang-jo's reforms Jungjong of Joseon



on day yeonsangun deposed, soldiers belonging coup leaders surrounded house of half-brother grand prince jinseong. kill himself, thinking yeonsangun going kill him; but, dissuaded wife later known queen dangyeong, grand prince jinseong found himself becoming eleventh king of joseon dynasty, or king jungjong. jungjong worked hard wipe out remnants of yeonsangun era reopening seonggyungwan, royal university, , office of censors, criticizes inappropriate actions of king. however, during days of reign, jungjong not exert regal authority freely because put him on throne exercised immense power. when 3 main leaders of coup died of old age , natural causes 8 years later, jungjong began assert authority , carried out large-scale reformation of government of jo gwang-jo , other sarim scholars.


jo gwang-jo strengthened local autonomy establishing self-governing system called hyang yak, promulgated confucian writings translating them in korean hangul , distributing them widely, pursued land reform distribute land more equally between rich , poor, , introduced supplementary system recruiting talents government. believed talented people including slaves should appointed officials regardless of social status. inspector general, enforced laws strictly no official dared receive bribe or exploit local populace during time according annals of joseon dynasty.


however, reforms faced opposition conservative nobles led coup in 1506 placed jungjong in power. after 4 years of reformist agenda, jungjong abruptly abandoned jo gwang-jo s programs because either lost confidence in jo s programs or feared jo becoming powerful. while jungjong , jo gwang-jo shared reformist agenda, jungjong chiefly interested in solidifying royal authority whereas latter more concerned neo-confucian ideology, according rule must virtuous example rest. in november 1519, when conservative officials slandered jo gwang-jo disloyal writing jo become king (주초위왕, 走肖爲王) honey on leaves caterpillars left behind same phrase if in supernatural manifestation, jungjong executed jo gwang-jo on charge of factionalism , exiled many of followers, abruptly abandoning reforms. incident known third literati purge of 1519 or gimyo massacre of scholars.
