predecessor lines

the line cape may built in 1863 tuckahoe , cape may railroad, , operated philadelphia , reading railway s atlantic city railroad , later pennsylvania-reading seashore lines (prsl). @ 1 time, rail line both excursions travel on known steel speedway shore. became part of conrail, ended passenger service on line in 1981, ended freight service on october 10, 1983 , sold line new jersey transit cape may branch.


establishment of cmsl

cmsl founded tony macrie (ceo) in january 1984. regular train service between cape may court house , cold spring village began in 1996. service extended in cape may city in 1999 after repairs swing bridge crossing cape may canal completed.


in 2005, mechanical issues cape may canal swing bridge prevented trains entering city of cape may. although bridge repaired year later, severe storm in april 2007 damaged tracks , left locomotives stranded in tuckahoe. after series of minor setbacks, passenger train service between rio grande , cape may city resumed on august 17, 2010.

new jersey seashore lines (njsl) subsidiary of cape may seashore lines. new jersey seashore lines created cape may seashore lines in conjunction clayton sand co. in wall, nj. seashore lines operates on 13 miles of rehabilitated track between lakehurst , woodmansie section of woodland township, clayton operates sand mine. new jersey seashore lines operate rail service transport sand , gravel clayton , serve needs of other customers might need rail service along line. line once owned central railroad of new jersey , once part of route of famed blue comet.

2012 vandalism , loss of service

on march 1, 2012, seashore lines received telephone call new jersey state police, advising them theft of track material had occurred on cape may branch, in area between woodbine , dennisville. cmsl s main line between tuckahoe , cape may city. investigating trooper informed them several individuals associated theft had been arrested , charged indictable offenses. arrested on monday, march 5, father , son team villas section of lower township, new jersey, along third individual rio grande. trooper mentioned investigation continuing, possibility of filing charges against additional individuals.


several days later, macrie , 2 seashore lines employees conducted detailed, thorough track inspection of entire area of theft, consisted of removal of tie plates , spikes, referred otm (other track material) in rail industry. inspection performed via track car , hi-rail truck, , walking track. inspection concluded area of theft encompassed approximately 6,800 linear feet of main line. actual theft of otm represented 75 percent of total amount of tie plates , spikes in particular section of track. in actions remove tie plates , spikes, perpetrators damaged , destroyed numerous cross ties.


excursion trains did not run during summer of 2012 due damage vandalism. company offered rides public on speeder vehicles along several miles of track @ cape may city end of line. macrie had stated cmsl planned have train service restored in 2013. of june 2017, service cape may has not resumed.
