service history
part of 1st u-boat flotilla, u-202 conducted 9 patrols in north atlantic, last 3 under command of kptlt. günter poser; member of ten wolfpacks.
1st, 2nd , 3rd patrols
u-202 s first patrol began when left kiel on 17 june 1941; passed without incident , concluded entry brest in france on 23 july after 37 days @ sea.
she had more success on second outing; departing brest on 11 august, attacking , sinking 2 ships east of greenland , south of iceland before returning brest on 17 september 1941.
her third patrol, beginning on 16 october, successful, saw destruction of british-registered flynderborg , gretavale northeast of newfoundland. returned french base on 13 november, after voyage of 29 days.
4th, 5th , 6th patrols
the submarine s fourth sortie towards moroccan coast. u-202 left brest on 13 december 1941. returned empty-handed on 27 december.
her fifth patrol produced better results, damaging british ships athelviscount 600 nmi (1,100 km; 690 mi) east southeast of halifax on 22 march 1942 , sinking loch don 500 nmi (930 km; 580 mi) north northeast of bermuda on 1 april. patrol 1 march 26 april, total of 57 days.
argentine merchant ship rio tercero, sunk u-202
her sixth foray, commencing on 27 may, successful. on 12 june landed 4 saboteurs @ amagansett, new york, on long island, part of operation pastorius. argentinian rio tercero went bottom 120 nmi (220 km; 140 mi) off new york on 22 june, followed american city of birmingham 250 nmi (460 km; 290 mi) east of cape hatteras, north carolina on 1 july. u-boat reached brest on 25 july, after 60 days.
7th, 8th , 9th patrols
the boat s seventh patrol took in northern coast of south america, leaving brest on 6 september 1942. things did not go well; u-202 attacked british aircraft on 8 september while still in bay of biscay , again on 29 september southeast of trinidad. although damaged, u-boat continued patrol, sinking 2 ships before returning base on 25 october.
she sank 1 ship , damaged 3 others after commencing eighth patrol on 12 january 1943. attacked south of azores on 23 february. u-boat returned brest on 26 march after 74 days away.
her ninth , final sortie began on 29 april 1943 , came end when sunk on 2 june 1943.
