in middle of september, disturbed atmospheric conditions trough or tropical wave existed on western caribbean sea , gradually coalesced near western cuba on september 15–16. so, surrounding surface weather observations did not suggest area of low pressure had generated, gradual organization continued until tropical depression formed on september 17 in central gulf of mexico 120 miles (193 km) north of yucatán peninsula. operationally, united states weather bureau failed detect tropical cyclone in gulf of mexico until day later. after formation, system moved northwestward, heading continued on september 18. @ time, system became tropical storm more 300 mi (483 km) south-southeast of new orleans, louisiana.


over next 3 days, intensifying storm executed gradual clockwise loop, moving south-southeast before turning west. after intensifying hurricane on september 21, storm began assuming more northwestward course, toward texas gulf coast. continued strengthen major hurricane, peaking @ 125 miles per hour (201 km/h) late on september 23. afterward, storm went ashore east of bay city, texas, @ peak intensity estimated central pressure of 942 millibars (27.82 inhg). however, few weather instruments sited close point of landfall, lowest recorded pressure on land 970.5 mb (28.66 inhg) in houston. after landfall, cyclone curved northeast , passed west of houston on september 24. accelerated continued move inland , transitioned extratropical storm on september 25. post-tropical system dissipated on september 27 on northeastern quebec, near torngat mountains national park.
