the isolation of disaster site compounded wartime conditions , little news published of disaster. relatives of victims did not receive news of loss until next day.


a board of inquiry established investigate crash. based on state of wreckage, found train had travelling in excess of 70 miles per hour (110 km/h) on curve speed limit of 30 miles per hour (48 km/h) , had derailed due operation of centrifugal force. found judgement of driver, 55-year-old john corcoran, markedly impaired had been drunk, , charged him serious dereliction of duty. tried in dunedin supreme court manslaughter, found guilty, , sentenced 3 years jail. train s guard reprimanded not taking action when became aware of train s excessive speed, not criminally prosecuted.


in years after disaster, had little legacy overshadowed world war ii. when memorial established victims of tangiwai disaster decades later, relatives of hyde disaster victims began work own memorial, led molly winter , elizabeth coleman. in august 1990, committee formed erect monument, 2.5 m high cairn, @ accessible site near location of disaster. cutting of disaster can walked, otago central railway closed on 30 april 1990 , has been converted otago central rail trail.
