the extension of cta line in median of kennedy expressway jefferson park o hare airport, included construction of cumberland station, first proposed mayor richard j. daley in 1972 chicago public works commission. cost of project estimated @ $80 million. chicago plan commission approved project on august 8, 1974; point, estimated cost of project had risen $174 million. federal government approved project , agreed provide 80 percent of funds construction in 1978, , construction on 7.6-mile (12.2 km) extension began in march 1980. extension planned open in 1982; however, opening delayed after series of incidents including 2 strikes workers on line. section of extension jefferson park river road, including cumberland, opened on february 27, 1983; cta ran free shuttle trains between new stations @ river road, , harlem day before opening riders acquainted new line. final cost of extension $198.9 million, cumberland station costing approximately $10 million.
in month following opening of 3 new stations 6,000 additional commuters used northwest service. cumberland station became particularly attractive suburban commuters des plaines , park ridge; study commissioned shortly after station s opening found 12.4% of commuters parking in cumberland , rosemont stations chicagoans. influx of suburban commuters new blue line stops led fall in ridership on chicago & northwestern s northwest line, traditionally served northwest suburbs near new stops.
