the conversion of titan oceanographic research ship began in may 1995 @ shipyard of maritime contractors, inc., @ bellingham, washington. delivered noaa in april 1996 after completion of conversion, ship commissioned noaa service noaas ka imimoana (r 333) on 25 april 1996.

ka imimoana deployed, recovered, , serviced national data buoy center s deep-sea moorings—which measure ocean currents, ocean temperatures, , atmospheric variables—in equatorial pacific ocean , transmitted buoy measurements in real time noaa s pacific marine environmental laboratory in seattle, washington. continuously measured upper ocean currents, surface salinity, carbon dioxide content, , sea-level atmospheric conditions while underway.
ka imimoana retired noaa on 18 june 2014. had been inactive since 2012.
