noaas ka imimoana (r 333) services atlas buoy in equatorial pacific ocean. atlas buoys measure ocean temperature @ varying depths , provide warning of upcoming el niño , la niña events.


the conversion of titan oceanographic research ship began in may 1995 @ shipyard of maritime contractors, inc., @ bellingham, washington. delivered noaa in april 1996 after completion of conversion, ship commissioned noaa service noaas ka imimoana (r 333) on 25 april 1996.


capabilities

ka imimoana has berthing 33 people in 21 single staterooms , 6 double staterooms providing capacity carry 12 scientists. can seat 24 people @ time in 2 crew s mess rooms, 8 in forward room , 16 in aft room. has medical treatment room 1 bunk, overseen united states public health service health programs officer.


ka imimoana has 950 sq ft (88 m) of laboratory space. on deck, has brailing winch, ctd winch, 3 cranes, a-frame, , j-frame. carries 2 boats, 22 ft (6.7 m) rigid-hulled inflatable boat (rhib) rescue boat , 17 ft (5.2 m) inflatable utility boat. equipped echosounders, hull-mounted acoustic release transducer, navigation fathometer, x-band , s-band radar, global positioning system receivers, vhf radio direction finder, , sperry gyrocompass.

ka imimoana home-ported @ pearl harbor, hawaii, , noaa ship dedicated solely climate research. supported noaa s tropical atmosphere ocean project, designed improve understanding of role of tropical ocean in modifying world s climate.


ka imimoana deployed, recovered, , serviced national data buoy center s deep-sea moorings—which measure ocean currents, ocean temperatures, , atmospheric variables—in equatorial pacific ocean , transmitted buoy measurements in real time noaa s pacific marine environmental laboratory in seattle, washington. continuously measured upper ocean currents, surface salinity, carbon dioxide content, , sea-level atmospheric conditions while underway.


ka imimoana retired noaa on 18 june 2014. had been inactive since 2012.
