the distinguishable physiographic aspect of east european craton extensive 3-km , more-thick riphean (middle late proterozoic) sedimentary cover on 3000-km-wide platform area (east european platform, eep, formerly known russian platform) . in sharp contrast exposed northwest portion of baltic shield, , ukrainian shield in southwest. lithospheric thickness varies 150–200 km in ukraine 120 km in southern russia on 250 km thick in ne baltic shield, extremely wide thickness fluctuations of crustal layers. shield in craton area of exposed crystalline crust while other part of craton “platform” crystalline crust or basement overlaid younger sedimentary cover. crustal segments of east european craton comprise both baltic shield , ukrainian shield, , sedimentary platform basement.
