ever since mohammad hatta resigned vice-president in december 1956, position had remained vacant rest of sukarno s time president. when suharto formally elected presidency in 1968 people s consultative assembly, continued remain vacant. in march 1973, hamengkubuwono ix elected vice president alongside suharto had been re-elected 2nd term president.he retained post yogyakarta governor during vice-presidential tenure.


hamengkubuwono ix s election not surprise popular figure in indonesia. civilian , election vice presidency hoped complement suharto s military background. despite being officially elected in 1973, can said hamengkubuwono ix had been de facto vice president beforehand regularly assumed leadership of country whenever suharto out of country. vice president, hamengkubuwono ix put in charge of welfare , given duty of supervising economic development.

these 2 elements recognized protesters had demanded suharto not stand term president. these protests reached peak in february 1978, when students of bandung technological institute (itb) published book giving reasons why suharto should not elected president. in response, suharto sent troops take on campus , issued ban on book. hamengkubuwono not accept suharto had done. in march 1978, hamengkubuwono rejected nomination vice president mpr. suharto asked hamengkubuwono change mind, hamengkubuwono continued reject offer , cited health reason not accepting nomination.


suharto took hamengkubuwono ix s rejection , in 1989 autobiography claim credit conceiving 1 march general offense.
