clyst st mary site of 1 of decisive battles in 1549 prayer book rebellion, when west country resistance protestant reformation quashed. after battle of woodbury common on 4 august 1549, rebels under control of humphrey arundell had re-grouped main contingent of 6,000 @ clyst st mary, on 5 august attacked central force led sir william francis, under control of john russell, 1st earl of bedford. after ferocious battle russell s troops gained advantage leaving thousand cornish , devonians dead , many more taken prisoner, 900 of whom massacred later day @ clyst heath. village burned , many of combatants , villagers drowned in river.
