during world war i, company commander captain lawrence of u.s. army overheard solomon louis , mitchell bobb conversing in choctaw language. found 8 choctaw men in battalion. eventually, fourteen choctaw men in army s 36th infantry division trained use language in code. helped american expeditionary forces win several key battles in meuse-argonne offensive in france, during final large german push of war. within 24 hours of choctaw language being pressed service, tide of battle had turned. in less 72 hours, germans retreating , allies in full attack. these soldiers known choctaw code talkers.
