history
1890s–1970s

the alshaya group has been in retail since 1890s, trading british india. in 1965, group opened sheraton in kuwait city, middle east s five-star hotel south of beirut, , first sheraton outside north america.


1980s–1990s

alshaya entered international retail franchising in 1983 acquisition of kuwait franchise uk retailer mothercare. today company operates stores mothercare in 14 markets. in 1999, alshaya entered food retail sector partnership starbucks. manages , operates multiple food brands including asha’s, dean & deluca, le pain quotidien, pizza express, pinkberry, p. f. chang s, shake shack, potbelly, ihop, cheesecake factory, texas roadhouse , katsuya philippe starck. alshaya launched own footwear , accessories brand milano in 1994.


2000s

alshaya’s acquisition of topshop franchise turkey in 2002 first expansion outside of middle east. company moved russia in 2005 acquisition of franchise rights mothercare.


in 2006, alshaya launched international clothing retailer h&m in middle east, followed number of us-headquartered brands looking expand middle east: dean , deluca (2008), express, p. f. chang s, pinkberry , payless shoesource (all 2009).


2010s

in 2010, alshaya added american eagle outfitters, pottery barn , pottery barn kids portfolio. secured franchise rights first international outlets of texas roadhouse, , opened first victoria s secret beauty , accessories stores in middle east in bahrain , kuwait.


in june 2012, first cheesecake factory , ihop restaurants outside north america opened in uae. in november 2012, further 8 brands added alshaya s portfolio: harvey nichols kuwait, victoria’s secret, jack wills, cos, teavana, garrett popcorn shops, west elm , williams sonoma.


in december 2012, alshaya opened alshaya retail academy in riyadh, saudi arabia, providing retail training , employment on graduation young saudi women. in april 2014, alshaya announced open 2 more alshaya retail academies in saudi arabia, in jeddah , dammam.


alshaya moved leisure & entertainment sector in june 2013 opening of kidzania kuwait, @ avenues (kuwait). sprinkles cupcakes, veranda , muji opened @ avenues in same year. katsuya philippe starck launched in kuwait , uae, , in december 2013, 6 alshaya restaurant brands introduced saudi arabia – cheesecake factory, ihop, texas roadhouse, shake shack, p. f. chang s , pizzaexpress.


in 2014, icing, popular retailer of jewelry , accessories, made debut in kuwait part of alshaya portfolio. opening represented brand’s first expansion outside americas.


2015 saw middle east debut of fast-food chicken restaurant raising cane s in kuwait.


in 2016, alshaya launched loyalty programme, privileges club, in kuwait, plans roll programme out across gcc markets. company opened first store american chocolatier bridgewater chocolate in middle east.


in 2017, company open first 4 seasons in kuwait, 4 seasons hotel kuwait @ burj alshaya, @ newly-constructed two-tower burj alshaya development in downtown kuwait city. burj alshaya features 22-story 4 seasons in eastern tower , house new corporate headquarters of company in 43-story western tower. western tower due completion in 2018 , complete development.
