usgs shakemap event
the earthquake occurred in area of complex tectonics caused continuing collision between northward moving indo-australian plate , eurasian plate, created arakan yoma mountains. in zone of highly oblique collision, of motion accommodated north-south trending sagaing fault, major dextral (right lateral) strike-slip fault runs through western , central part of burma. remaining component of shortening across zone causes distributed deformation of eastern burma , thailand extending laos. deformation partly accommodated set of southwest-northeast trending sinistral (left lateral) strike-slip faults. faults closest epicenter of earthquake mae chan , nam ma faults. focal mechanism earthquake consistent left-lateral movement on 1 of these faults, away main zones of seismic activity in burma. other recent significant earthquakes in area included 2011 yunnan earthquake , 2007 laos earthquake. according earth observatory of singapore, appears earthquake caused motion on western segment of nan ma fault.
