the king caesar house, built 1809


the federal style house built ezra weston ii , family completed in 1809. several duxbury shipbuilders built large new homes in wake of embargo act of 1807 severely impacted maritime industries in new england , caused widespread unemployment. according tradition, shipyards inactive, many ship carpenters sought alternative work , merchants such ezra weston gave them employment in building elegant new houses.


when weston died, king caesar house passed son, alden b. weston (1805–1880). weston family fortune spent rapidly alden’s 2 brothers , consequently lived frugally. alden weston married @ age 55 did not have children. wife predeceased him , alden weston died alone in king caesar house in 1880.


king caesar’s grandchildren, sons , daughters of gershom b. weston, inherited house time in disrepair. sold frederick bradford knapp, former superintendent of buildings @ harvard college, in 1886. knapp established powder point school boys, preparatory school, , converted ezra weston’s farm athletic fields , outbuildings classrooms , gymnasiums. king caesar house designated headmaster s house. powder point school boys ceased operation in 1926 , knapp family sold property in 1937.


the king caesar house passed dr. hermon carey bumpus, former director of american museum of natural history in new york. bumpus extensively restored house had fallen disrepair after knapps died. in 1945, elizabeth weber-fulop, accomplished austrian painter, purchased house. finally, in 1965, duxbury rural , historical society purchased king caesar house , converted museum dedicated duxbury s maritime era. king caesar house museum located @ 120 king caesar road in duxbury, massachusetts.
