mahone, after war


he active in economic , political life of virginia 30 years, beginning in midst of civil war when elected virginia general assembly delegate norfolk in 1863. later served mayor of petersburg. after unsuccessful bid governor in 1877, became leader of readjuster party, coalition of democrats, republicans, , african-americans seeking reduction in virginia s prewar debt, , appropriate allocation made former portion of state constituted new state of west virginia. in 1881, mahone led successful effort elect readjuster candidate william e. cameron next governor, , became united states senator.


the readjuster party did more refinance commonwealth s debts. party invested heavily in schools, african americans, , appointed african american teachers such schools. party increased funding virginia tech , established black counterpart, virginia state. readjuster party abolished poll tax , public whipping post. because of expanded voting, danville elected black-majority town council , hired unprecedented integrated police force.


with senate split 37–37 between republicans , democrats, mahone , third-party candidate willing caucus latter both had political influence. under senate rules, vice president of united states chester a. arthur, republican, cast tie-breaking votes. mahone bargained significant concessions before decided caucus. despite being freshman senator, received chairmanship of influential agriculture committee , gained control on virginia s federal patronage, both president james a. garfield, , right select both senate s secretary , sergeant @ arms.


however, mahone still faced opposition conservative party of virginia, aligned democrats , grew more powerful after 1882 election, when democrat grover cleveland elected president (with patronage perks). mahone maintained republican party affiliation, leading virginia delegations republican national conventions of 1884 , 1888. however, lost senate seat conservative democrat john w. daniel in 1886. moreover, john mercer langston began political career in petersburg in 1888, republican criticizing malone neglecting african americans except on voting day.


in 1889, mahone ran governor on republican ticket lost democrat philip w. mckinney. 80 more years before virginia sent non-democrat governor s mansion (republican a. linwood holton jr., in 1969).
