the line heads south berowra hornsby using main northern line. trains branch divert on north shore line. second branch starts @ hornsby , continues down main northern line epping. @ epping line heads underground macquarie employment centre , chatswood via epping chatswood line. line surfaces @ chatswood , joins berowra branch on north shore line run south towards city. trains pass through north sydney station before heading across sydney harbour bridge, through western limb of city circle , stations of central , redfern.

services run along main suburban railway, using middle suburban pair of 6 tracks between redfern , strathfield. services not stop @ intermediate stations between redfern , burwood. @ strathfield, trains epping via rhodes head onto flyover on main lines , before heading north on main northern line, crossing parramatta river between rhodes , meadowbank, , terminating @ epping s surface platforms. other services continue west strathfield granville trains join main western line. after passing through parramatta, trains reach blacktown, line divides in two. western branch continues along main western line far emu plains , north-western branch heads richmond using richmond line.
