history

the history of lokomotiv starts in 1946 in mineralnye vody. there few volunteers play basketball during first after-war years – not more 150 people. teenagers trained experienced , patient mentors – railways workers grigory abugov , nikolai kharchenko. grigory abugov later became famous coach, raised number of high-class professionals. of them still in basketball coaches.

lokomotiv played in first league championship number of years, until in 1994 got elite of national basketball. in 1999 lokomotiv got right represent russia in european tournaments , won cup of international railways sports union.

the season 2002–03 became final team mineralnye vody. lokomotiv hardly reached play-off, taking 8th place out of 10, lost champion cska moscow in 3 matches. became obvious many changes needed made. decision hence made move club more developed , economically growing area – rostov region.

the basketball club lokomotiv rostov established in 2003 in rostov-on-don. project organised andrey vedischev, world-class master of sports, bronze medallist of european championship , russian national championship.

during next 6 years club played in city of don. during these years railways team 1 of strongest in russia: regularly entering play-off of national championship , in european cups. best achievement of lokomotiv during these years 5th place in russian national championship (2006–07 season) , final of fiba europe cup (2004–05 season). in summer of 2009 president of russian railways, vladimir yakunin, made decision move club rostov-on-don krasnodar. main reason arenas in rostov not satisfying requirements of russian national championship , club s european tournaments.

first year in krasnodar (2009–2010)

relocation followed name change lokomotiv kuban. lokomotiv s first season in krasnodar under sašo filipovski. season started railways team. krasnodar got close away win against cska in first round, won 4 times in row , settled on second place in standings. second half of season not successful, loko went through few defeats , lost position in russian league, end of 2009 moved down middle of standings.

sašo filipovski replaced lithuanian national basketball team head coach – kęstutis kemzūra.

after losing chance of staying in eurochallenge, railways team concentrated on russian league. under kęstutis kemzūra team started showing stable results. gerald green efficient player in team after second half of season, center grigory shukhovtsov got invitation russian national basketball team @ end of season.

2010–11 season

the direction kęstutis kemzūra chose team improved position during season, allowed raise fourth place in pbl , finals in eurochallenge, loko lost krka – 77:83.

2011–12 season

lokomotiv-kuban have played @ 7,500 capacity basket-hall krasnodar since 2011

in 2011–12 season lokomotiv kuban spent under legendary coach božidar maljković , got through eurocup top-8, took bronze medals in russian league. right play in second important european clubs tournament, eurocup, lokomotiv got during previous season, when managed through finals of european clubs tournament – eurochallenge.

the next season, team krasnodar looked confident despite fact fresher in european cup. passing group selection second result in group – 4 wins in 6 matches, lokomotiv went through last 16, had meet lithuanian lietuvos rytas, italian benneton , german alba berlin. in quarterfinals lokomotiv met khimki, @ end became champion.

apart debut in elite european tournament, eurocup, club krasnodar first time played in vtb united league (eastern-european championship). lokomotiv demonstrated top-level basketball in regular season, got play-offs, , ended on fourth place.

2012–13 season

evgeny pashutin takes position of loko s head coach season 2012–13 – specialist had been working on similar posts in spartak, cska, , unics. according aims , objectives set club, roster improved significantly. nick calathes, mantas kalnietis, aleks marić, derrick brown, alexey savrasenko, simas jasaitis, valery likhodey joined team. during season richard hendrix called strengthen roster. in eurocup final, in charleroi, on 13 april 2013, club krasnodar won spanish bilbao – 75:64, , not earned prestigious trophy in history, ticket euroleague next season.

2013–14 season

in 2013–14 season, team debuted in euroleague, got through top 16, fighting against strongest european teams. derrick brown announced euroleague mvp of month of november. vtb united league playoffs stayed in our minds series cska, loko started 2 wins. however, moscow club took final 3 games, , lokomotiv left championship @ quarterfinals. @ end of season club s management decided not sign new contract head coach evgeny pashutin.

2014–15 season

the new coach sergei bazarevich joined team during off-season, club s management started forming new roster. marcus williams, aleks marić, valery likhodey, , simas jasaitis left team. @ same time, anthony randolph, malcolm delaney, aaron miles, nikita kurbanov, evgeny voronov , nikita balashov called strengthen team. 1 of main priorities mentioned president of club getting euroleague winning eurocup, or going through vtb united league finals. both goals weren t accomplished.

spectacular rise euroleague final 4 (2015–2016)

lokomotiv kuban hired georgios bartzokas new head coach. received wild card 2015–16 euroleague, had since achieved qualification 2016 euroleague final 4 beating fc barcelona 3–2 in playoffs. star players kuban malcolm delaney , anthony randolph, got places in all-euroleague teams. opponent during final 4 semifinal fellow russian team cska moscow.

on 14 november 2016, 1 season contract signed new head coach saša obradović.
