the current unitary authority of monmouthshire created on 1 april 1996 successor district of monmouth along llanelly community blaenau gwent, both of districts of gwent. use of name monmouthshire rather monmouth area controversial, being supported mp monmouth, roger evans, being opposed paul murphy, mp torfaen (inside historic county of monmouthshire being reconstituted separate unitary authority). area covers 60% of historic county, 20% of population. new council headquarters building @ site of coleg gwent, usk proposed , developed. planning permission granted in september 2011. new county hall in usk opened in 2013.
