haym solomon, personal friend of general george washington , financier of american revolution



during american revolutionary war, polish-born haym solomon (1740–1785), immigrated new york , friend of george washington, key financier helped fund continental army. solomon became agent french consul, paymaster french forces in north america. in 1781, began working extensively robert morris, newly appointed superintendent finance thirteen colonies. working out of london coffee house in philadelphia, @ 1 time solomon sold $600,000 in bills of exchange clients. @ 1 point, when washington s war chest , treasury of continental congress empty, washington determined needed @ least $20,000 finance campaign. when morris told him there no funds , no credit available, washington gave him simple eloquent order: send haym salomon . haym again came through, , $20,000 raised. washington conducted yorktown campaign, proved final battle of revolution, haym salomon.


salomon negotiated sale of majority of war aid france , dutch republic, selling bills of exchange american merchants. solomon supported various members of continental congress during stay in philadelphia, including james madison , james wilson. requested below market interest rates, , never asked repayment.
