when anton van wouw arrived in south africa netherlands, twenty-eight years old. here met indigenous people of country first time. rendering of africans shows perceptual awareness. not van wouw show anatomical characteristics of african, created these studies of indigenous people dignity , understanding. spirit , culture come fore in these works. van wouw modelled life , subjects shown in different moods , situations. serene , pensive mood evident in bronze sculpture, entitled thinker (1935). chin resting on hand, subject seems unaware of world around him, lost in own thoughts.


a happy , joyful mood created in bronze work laughing basutu (1936). arms folded on chest , head turned right, subject seems happy , lively. play of light on features adds liveliness of work.


in bronze work shangaan (1907) see reserved person. looks down, brow furrowed , arms tightly crossed on chest if cutting himself off onlooker.


in sleeping african of 1907, subject totally relaxed, fast asleep mouth open , head tilted right. arms lightly folded. in contrast work, shangaan seems tense , worried. calmness, serenity , regal element present in zulu (1907). striking contrast evident in texture of hair , beard, smooth skin. man seems undisturbed trivialities. looks ahead eyes cast down, proud zulu.


van wouw created african in everyday activities seen in hammer worker (1911). worker busy hammering @ rock , encircled rock. figure seems ‘grow’ out of rock. skapu player (1907) shows african in seated position relaxing while plays music. mieliepap eater (1907) shows african preparing food in typical pose. sits stirring food in three-legged pot.


the hunter drinking (1907) shows lithe body nature’s child. same horizontal composition present in dagga smoker (1907). dignity , respect, van wouw sculptured king khama, head of bamangwatu. wise old man stares ahead tired eyes. old age , experience evident in work of van wouw. model bushman hunter known van wouw. worked van wouw studied build , movements. van wouw played bow , arrow games him. understanding of small bushman quite evident in work.
