origins , medieval times

the first traces of human activity on right bank of senne date stone age , bronze age. remnants of roman villa , of frankish necropolis found on territory of anderlecht. first mention of name anderlecht, however, dates 1047 under forms anrelech, andrelet (1111), andreler (1148), , anderlech (1186). @ time, community home chapter of canons , 2 feudal manors, of powerful lords of aa , of anderlecht.

in 1356, louis of male, count of flanders fought against brussels on territory of anderlecht, in so-called battle of scheut, supposedly on monetary matter. although defeated sister-in-law, joanna, duchess of brabant, , briefly took title, regained following year of charles iv, holy roman emperor. in 1393, joanna’s charter made anderlecht part of brussels. around time church of saint guido rebuilt above earlier romanesque crypt in brabant gothic style.

15th-18th centuries

the city of anderlecht became beacon of culture in 15th , 16th century. in 1521, erasmus lived in canons’ house few months. charles, duke of aumale , grand veneur of france had residence here.

the 17th , 18th century marked wars between low countries , france. on november 13, 1792, right after battle of jemappes, general dumouriez , french revolutionary army routed austrians here once again. among consequences disbanding of canons , anderlecht being proclaimed independent commune french.

19th century , later

the 19th century saw remarkable population growth, because of proximity rapidly expanding brussels. remarkable new urban developments , garden cities such la roue/het rad , moortebeek built @ beginning of 20th century house influx of newcomers. today, name anderlecht rings bell in every belgian ear successful football club.
