in tenth century, emperor romanos lekapenos erected near chalke chapel dedicated christ chalkites, name of image of jesus adorned main entrance of chalke. image - being 1 of major religious symbols of city - had great importance during iconoclastic period. shrine small contain no more fifteen people. in 971, emperor john tzimiskes enlarged chapel, building two-storey church celebrate victory against kievan rus , , endowed 50-member clergy. new building, erected in part using material nearby palace baths tou oikonomíou , in ruins, lavishly decorated. john buried in church s crypt in 976. in 1183, andronikos komnenos proclaimed emperor here, in association young emperor alexios ii komnenos, put death afterward. according russian pilgrim, church still in use in second quarter of fifteenth century.
ottoman age
after fall of constantinople ottomans in 1453, hostel of combat engineers (turkish: cebehane) placed near church, , church abandoned. afterwards, nearby church of st. john @ dihippion, ground floor of building used house wild animals (lions - whence turkish name, arslan hane - tigers, elephants, etc.) intended court of sultan in nearby topkapi palace. @ same time, upper floor had windows walled , used lodge fresco painters , miniaturists active in sultan s palace (turkish: nakkaş hane). in 1741 fire in hagia sophia neighborhood damaged building, nearby haseki hürrem sultan bath. in 1802 upper floor caught fire, , in 1804 building demolished. there numerous fires in following years in new edifices built on site, until in 1846-48 swiss italian architect gaspare fossati built main seat of new istanbul university on same site.
