Formations of Unkar Group Unkar Group
deep reddish, (and dipping), dox formation overlain cardenas basalt, in contact above multi-banded, horizontal nankoweap formation-(grand canyon supergroup), downstream tanner canyon, tanner rapid, , tanner graben.
the cardenas basalt composed of thin discontinuous beds of pahoehoe lava flows of olivine-rich basalt. lower part of formation consists of complexly interbedded, thin, , discontinuous beds of basalt, hyaloclastite, , sandstone form low, talus-covered slopes. upper unit of cardenas basalt consists of cliff-forming basaltic , andesitic lava flows interbedded beds of breccia, sandstone, , lapillite. no fossils have been found in cardenas basalt. cardenas basalt formed subaerial eruption of basaltic , andesitic magma in wet coastal environments such river deltas or tidal flats. angular unconformities of vastly differing magnitudes separate cardenas basalt overlying nankoweap formation , tonto group.
basalt (diabase) sills , dikes intrude rocks within unkar group members below cardenas basalt. consist of black, medium- coarse-grained, olivine-rich basalt contains plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene, magnetite-ilmenite, , biotite. chemical composition indicates share common source pyroclastic deposits , lavas of cardenas basalt. isochron ages of these sills , dikes , cardenas basalt lavas identical. sills exposed in outcrops of bass formation , hakatai shale. these sills range in thickness 23 m (75 ft) @ hance rapids, eastern grand canyon, 300 m (980 ft) in hakatai canyon in shinumo creek area. basaltic sills form prominent, dark gray cliffs in area below desert view , west of palisades of desert. exposures of shinumo quartzite, , dox formation expose several basaltic dikes. feeder dikes basaltic sills not exposed. however, feeder dikes cardenas basalt can traced, discontinuously, within few meters of bases.
