history

following victory in 2011 new south wales election, o farrell government embarked on reform of transport in new south wales. in november 2011, new organisation, transport nsw, created improve planning , coordination of transport projects , services. organisation developed new rail timetable , branding, put effect on 20 october 2013. saw merger of north shore line , western line (berowra - city via gordon emu plains or richmond via strathfield) northern line (hornsby - city via macquarie park epping via strathfield). new numbering system introduced , line given number t1.


railway line history

the north shore, northern & western line utilises number of different railway lines , result of various schemes link lines together. line centred around main suburban railway line runs central granville. main northern , main western lines branch main suburban line. north shore line branches main northern line , later extended through city , connected main suburban line well. epping chatswood line provides second connection between main northern , north shore lines, enabling creation of north shore, northern & western line s current layout.

the main western line opened penrith in 1863 branch junction main south line @ granville. electrification reached parramatta in 1928 , penrith in 1955.


a branch line opened richmond in 1864 under stewardship of engineer james moore. electrification riverstone richmond opened in august 1991. through running , sydney commenced in 1992.

north shore line

the north shore line opened on 1 january 1890 between hornsby , st leonards. line extended sydney harbour foreshore @ milsons point in 1893. transport between original milsons point station , central sydney ferry boat. line electrified in 1927.


when sydney harbour bridge opened in 1932 new milsons point station (on bridge approach) came operation , north shore line extended through , on sydney harbour bridge link underground lines of central sydney. result 2 ends of north shore line link sydney railway system @ central , hornsby.


main northern , epping chatswood lines

the traditional northern line suburban portion of main northern line opened in 1886 , electrified in 1926. when sydney harbour bridge opened, northern line connected city underground , north shore line.


in 2009 epping chatswood line opened. traditional northern line route ran hornsby north sydney via strathfield , city. when epping chatswood line opened, northern line split in two, trains north of epping operating via new link, approaching city via north shore line , rejoining traditional route before terminating @ epping. northern line colour coded red prior being merged north shore , western lines. after merging, northern line loop split on weekdays, trains upper northern line continuing richmond or emu plains.


in 2018 epping chatwood line closed , converted metro. result, traditional northern line route hornsby central via strathfield reinstated expanded train services on north shore line. coincide proposed new timetable year.
