history

vidin emerged @ place of old celtic settlement known dunonia. settlement evolved roman fortified town called bononia. town grew 1 of important centres of province of upper moesia, encompassing territory of modern north-western bulgaria , eastern serbia.


when slavs settled in area, called town badin or bdin, modern name comes from. similarly, anna komnene refers vidynē (Βιδύνη) in alexiad.

vidin s main landmark, baba vida fortress, built in period 10th 14th century. in middle ages vidin used important bulgarian city, bishop seat , capital of large province. between 971 , 976 town center of samuil s possessions while brothers ruled south. in 1003 vidin seized basil ii after eight-month siege because of betrayal of local bishop. importance once again rose during second bulgarian empire (1185–1422) , despots influential figures in empire , on several occasions chosen emperors. mid 13th century ruled shishman family. in 1356, bulgarian tsar ivan alexander isolated vidin bulgarian monarchy , appointed son ivan stratsimir (1356–1396) absolute ruler of vidin s new city-state - tsardom of vidin (bdin / badin).

in 1365, tsardom of vidin occupied magyar crusaders. under hungarian rule, city became known bodony, occupation short-lived. in 1369, second bulgarian empire drove out hungarian military, in 1396 vidin occupied foreign force again.


the ottomans

the ottomans went on conquer despotates of dobrudzha, prilep , velbazhd well. vidin s independence did not last long. in 1396 ottomans invaded , turned vidin sanjdak.


in late years of ottoman rule, vidin centre of turkish rebel osman pazvantoğlu s breakaway state.


in 1853, times of london reported widdin, called, was



a considerable town, population of 26,000, , garrison of 8,000 10,000 men. widdin 1 of important fortified places of military line of danube. covers approaches of servia, commands little wallachia, defiles of transylvania, and, above all, opening of road leads through nissia , sophia on adrianople. form irregular pentagon; bastioned, possesses fortified castle, 2 redoubts in islands, , defences completed extensive marsh.
