monument gyula fényi (kalocsa, hungary).


he born in sopron, hungary, eleventh child of merchant family. in 1864 became member of society of jesus, , sent kalocsa instructor of chemistry, mathematics, physics , natural history of world. studied @ university @ innsbruck beginning in 1874, trained in theology, mathematics , physics. after completing studies in 1878, return teaching , serve assistant @ haynald observatory in kalocsa. in 1885 became director of observatory, , remain @ post until retiring due poor health in 1913. continued astronomical observations in retirement.


fényi gyula noted observations of sun, including spectroscopic studies of solar prominences, sun spots. first person demonstrate correlation between number of solar prominences , number of sun spots. between 1880 until 1919 assembled on 6,000 drawings of sun, using same instrument. (these drawings archived @ heliophysical observatory, in debrecen, hungary.) published on 200 scientific papers in several languages. in 1916 elected corresponding member of hungarian academy of sciences.
