during 18th century, growing population of paris resulted in filling of existing cemeteries, causing public health concerns. towards end of 18th century, decided create 3 new large cemeteries , relocate existing cemeteries within city limits. human remains progressively moved renovated section of abandoned mines become full-fledged ossuary. entrance located on present day place denfert-rochereau.


the ossuary became tourist attraction on small scale 19th century, , has been open public on regular basis 1867. although officially named ossuaire municipal, known popularly catacombs . though entire subterranean network of paris mines not burial place such, term catacombs of paris used commonly refer whole.
